One grew up wanting to be a pro baseball player. I watched the sport through the eyes and voices like Mel Allen & Vin Scully. I learned how to “turn two” from Ozzie Smith and Ryne Sandberg. I wanted to bat like Rod Carew, Carl Yastrzemski or George Brett, probably all rolled into one. I watch double-headers on Saturdays with the Dodgers, Cardinals or the Kansas City Royals. Those men on the diamond were the leading men that one lacked in one’s own life, at age thirteen, as my biological father faded from my life and my grandfather died on the Fourth of July, 1986. Thereafter, though my mother was the bravest, most courageous and doggedly persistent soul in one’s life, teenage boys need guidance
